Editorial #181: A Happy New Year To You

Need Autism Politico say more?

Yes.

Because if this blog were in existence for ten years instead of just this first one, we would have said “Happy New Year” every year but still wound up writing the same blog entries about how autistics are being mistreated and how autistics themselves misbehave.

So even though Autism Politico is wishing you a Happy New Year, and we mean it, we know this blog entry’s sentiment is going to wash off within minutes of it’s posting because nothing will actually change in the real world until people actually make an effort to change.

Editorial #176: Swine Flu

Did you know there are Swine Flu epidemic fears in Wales?

Given the common knowledge base of most people, hardly anyone who reads this will know where Wales is. Wales is in the UK. England, to be precise.

A cluster of swine flu cases at a private school in Wales have sparked fears that a national epidemic could be emerging.

The cases follow The Assembly Government urging people to have the seasonal flu jab after it was revealed that 10 people had died from swine flu in six weeks. All of those who died were under the age of 65. Figures show that only 34% of younger people in high-risk groups with regards to swine flu have had the vaccination.

Does anyone who reads this blog know that 10 people have died in the last 6 weeks in Britain?

All this is by way of saying that if you have any common sense, you will talk to your doctor about whether or not it’s time to get your swine flu shot.

Anti-vaxers, of course, will probably go without. How odd that they should willingly risk reducing their numbers within the population by avoiding the needle.

Editorial #175: Merry What?

Autism Politico wants to remind you…

1) If you are a caregiver who has subjected your autistic kid to quack therapies this year…

2) If you are a teacher who had subjected your autistic student to ABA therapy…

3) If you are a doctor who put an autistic patient on an autism registry…

4) If you are a government official who has denied funding for autistics…

5) If you are an employer who has denied a capable autistic employment…

6) If you are a person who made fun of someone with autism…

7) If you are a member of an autistic advocacy organization who bullied autistics who do not agree with your points of view on autism…

Holiday greetings and presents during the holiday season are hollow, meaningless gestures that only reinforce your disrespect for your fellow human beings and remind autistics that there isn’t much point in learning to socialize with people like you.

Editorial #164: Observation #6

Autism Politico observes that there was a study a while back that concluded:

“Violent Television Viewing During Preschool Is Associated With Antisocial Behavior During School Age”

Could it be that violent television programs are causing autism? After all, in the minds of anti-vaxers, autism is anti-social behavior encapsulated.

Oddly, even though we have a study published by Pediatrics which says there is a definite causal link between violent television viewing and anti-social behavior, we don’t hear anything about anti-vaxers screaming to the world that it’s time for kids to quit watching violent shows on TV.

Heck, many times we read on some anti-vaxers’ Facebook pages that their kids are watching some violent TV show as mom or dad social network’s.

Amazing, isn’t it? Here anti-vaxers can take a solid step to prevent autism in their kids, and they are spending time raving about mercury causing autism, which no study has proven yet. They may subject their kids to chelation therapy, hyperbaric oxygen chambers, gluten-free diets, faith healers, coffee enemas. But some of them won’t switch off their TV sets will they?

Of course, no study has proven that violent TV viewing causes autism, but still, why will anti-vaxers believe something which no study can prove, and not take action on something which studies have already proven to be true? That’s Autism Politico’s observation of their behavior anyway.

The abstract of the study concludes:

“CONCLUSIONS. Viewing of violent programming by preschool boys is associated with subsequent aggressive behavior. Modifying the content that is viewed by young children may be warranted.”

Come on anti-vaxers! Why the hypocrisy?

Editorial #162: Bioresonance Quackery

Autism Politico is pleased to read that yet another form of quack medicine has gotten slammed by reputable medical authorities. And this time, someone was even fined.

A general practitioner has been fined S$5,000 and censured by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) for professional misconduct.

Dr Kay Aih Boon Erwin, who practices at the KCS Medical Centre at Blk 515, Bedok North Avenue 2, was found to have failed to treat his patients according to generally accepted methods of treatment.

He used a device called a Bioresonance Machine to treat his patients’ smoking habits, allergies and behavioural issues as a result of autism.

Autism Politico has to admit that it would be an amazing machine if it actually worked. After all, if this machine can do what gluten-free therapies, hyperbaric oxygen therapies, ABA, and other autism treatments that are considered quack can’t, perhaps the machine could cure other things, like cancer, modern-man’s divorce from God, world hunger, etc.

But given that the machine cannot do any of these things, it’s best kept away from the public and stockpiled along with other cure-alls sold off the back of wagons.

Editorial #159: Observation #4

Autism Politico observes that we seldom hear anti-vaxers complaining about the vaccinations their pets are required to have. Is this because anti-vaxers don’t have pets, or because they don’t care what kind of supposedly harmful ingredients are being injected into their pets?

Pets only live so long. Don’t these anti-vaxers notice that dogs and cats that are injected with the rabies vaccine DON’T display any autistic tendencies as time passes? You’d think it would happen instantly, as it supposedly does in humans, or in chimps.

Why aren’t these people subjecting their pets to chelation therapy, or gluten-free therapy, or hyperbaric oxygen therapy? Maybe they love their pets too much to treat them that cruelly. Or maybe they just don’t give a damn about “stupid animals.”

Just an observation.

Editorial #153: 65% Of Measles Cases In US In Unvaccinated People

Autism Politico has learned that unvaccinated kids in the US are the ones who have the most measles cases.

Two out of every three American children who have been infected with measles recently did not receive a vaccination against the illness, claims a report in The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Something to remember. Another thing to remember is how widespread the disease was before the world began vaccinating for it.

They discovered that 65-percent of the cases in the U.S. occurred in unvaccinated subjects. Infections among Americans were most common among children under the age of 15, and there were a total of 557 confirmed cases of the illness worldwide during the period studied. Prior to the introduction of the vaccine, Reuters says that as many as 4 million people caught measles annually.

If you are vaccinated, that is great. Please urge others to get vaccinated as well. The fewer people with illnesses we have on this planet, the lower the risk of death to these people, the lower the risk of spread of infection, and the less of a drain it is on our medical system.

Editorial #152: FDA Issues Warnings to ‘Chelation’ Marketers

Autism Politico is pleased to see the FDA taking action against purveyors of unapproved chelation therapy drugs.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned eight companies that their over-the-counter (OTC) chelation products are unapproved drugs and devices and that it is a violation of federal law to make unproven claims about these products. There are no FDA-approved OTC chelation products.
Outstanding. This should go a long way toward preventing autistics from being harmed by some forms of chelation therapy.

The companies that received the warning letters claim that their products treat a range of diseases by removing toxic metals from the body. Some also claim to treat autism spectrum disorder, cardiovascular diseases, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, macular degeneration, and other serious conditions. Some companies that received the warning letters also claim their products will detect the presence of heavy metals to justify the need for chelation therapy.

The drug products involved have not been evaluated by the FDA for treatment of these diseases, and violate the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA). Despite the claims of the companies that received warning letters, the effectiveness in treating any of the diseases listed is unsubstantiated.
The FDA has clearly stated that there is no proof that chelation treats autism. Parents and caregivers who continue to attempt to treat children with autism go against the advice of the FDA.

The companies must take prompt action to correct the legal violations cited in the warnings letters or face possible legal action, including seizure and injunction. The FDA issued warning letters to the following companies:

This is outstanding, and Autism Politico hopes the FDA seeks enforcement against those which fail to comply with the directive.

Editorial #144: ADHD Is Genetic Too!

Autism Politico was thrilled to read that a common comorbidity of autism, ADHD, is genetic in origin.

It’s funny how the vaccines cause autism brigade never really says that vaccines cause anything else BUT autism. But here is more news that works against them. With autism already shown to be genetic by 137 scientists in 50 locations in 9 countries around the world, we now have this:

The research by a team of scientists in Cardiff University concluded that ADHD is a brain development disorder. The study involved genetic analysis of DNA from 366 children with the disorder and 1,047 without the condition. The researchers found that children with the disorder were much more likely to have small DNA segments duplicated or missing than the other children.

The researchers also found significant overlap between these segments and those linked to autism and schizophrenia. The research suggests there may be a shared biological basis to autism and the disorder.

So now, in addition to researchers studying autism who say the disorder is genetic, we now have researchers studying ADHD who say that autism is genetic.

Another thing Autism Politico likes about this article is what one researcher said:

She said the study proved that ADHD should be seen as a neurodevelopmental disorder like autism rather than as a behavioural problem.

So no more discipline for ADHD folks is necessary, and hopefully, we will see ABA made a thing of the past here as well as in autism spectrum disorders.

More and more it seems that love and acceptance are the way to deal with people who have disorders, and love and acceptance seem to be the hardest thing for curebies to give. Perhaps curebies have a disorder of their own. While we can love them and accept them, their refusal to believe in science causes other people pain. Perhaps these curebies deserve to be subjected to their own quack therapies to get them to change their minds?

Editorial #87: Special Diets

Autism Politico knows that special diets are reported by studies not to work.

“An expert panel says there’s no rigorous evidence that digestive problems are more common in children with autism compared to other children, or that special diets work, contrary to claims by celebrities and vaccine naysayers.”

Nevertheless, parents continue to put their autistic kids on special diets in an attempt to treat or cure them.

Well, Autism Politico cannot give out medical or dietary advice, but it can offer opinions. Folks, see your doctors first and ask your doctors’ advice before going forward with this… but it just seems that parents who persist in believing that special diets work -when studies say they don’t- may have significant psychological problems.

It’s like believing that fiction is real and reality is fiction.

Perhaps the cure for this ailment is…you guessed it…suggesting that parents go on special diets of their own. Parents, if you are reading this, one thing you might try is concocting the most disgusting thing you can imagine eating and see how it tastes. Then reflect a little bit on how much you have been making you children eat similar tasting crap. If you still feel good about yourself afterwards, then you may want to go see a shrink.

Or better yet, maybe you need chelation, or perhaps you should get some oxygen in your brains via hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Perhaps you should be subjected to ABA therapy, or floortime.

Just a suggestion from Autism Politico.
